Airbnb Guest Review Templates That Get 5 Stars Back

Writing guest reviews is the part of hosting most people do last, quickly, and badly. A good guest review takes three minutes, helps the host community, and compounds your own reputation over hundreds of stays.

What makes a guest review useful

Other hosts are reading your guest reviews to answer one question: would I accept this booking? They want specific, honest detail, not platitudes. "Great guests!" tells the next host nothing. "Communicated clearly before arrival, followed house rules, left the apartment tidy" tells the next host everything they need to know.

Specificity also does something subtle for your own reputation. Future hosts who read your reviews see the standards you notice and care about. That positions you as a thoughtful host, which matters when guests then click through to your listing.

The three-part framework

Every useful guest review covers three things: communication, house rules and behaviour, condition at check-out. Order doesn't matter, coverage does.

For excellent guests (5 stars)

"[Name] was a pleasure to host. Communication before and during the stay was clear and prompt, they respected the house rules including the no-shoes policy, and they left the apartment in excellent condition, dishes washed, bins emptied, keys returned as requested. Welcome back any time."

Swap the specific details for whatever actually mattered in your stay. Did they arrive on time? Did they let you know about issues calmly instead of panicking? Did they leave the kitchen clean? Pick the two or three things you genuinely noticed.

For good but unremarkable guests (5 stars, shorter)

"[Name] was a considerate guest. Communication was easy, they followed the house rules, and the apartment was left as expected. Happy to host again."

This is your default when nothing specific stood out. It's honest, positive, and gives the next host the basic reassurance they need.

For guests with minor issues (4 stars)

"[Name] was friendly and communication was generally easy. A few small things, arrival was a couple of hours later than the agreed time without a heads-up, and the kitchen needed a bit more clean-up than usual, but overall a reasonable stay."

Honest but not harsh. Future hosts deserve to know about communication or tidiness issues. The specific detail lets the next host make their own judgement.

For guests you wouldn't host again (3 stars or thumbs-down)

"Communication was slow during the stay and house rules around [specific issue, e.g. quiet hours, no extra guests] were not consistently followed. The apartment required additional cleaning beyond our standard turnover. I would not rehost."

Factual, specific, no emotion. "I would not rehost" is the clearest signal you can give other hosts without crossing into personal attack. Never describe the guest's character, only their behaviour during the stay.

Things to avoid in guest reviews

Never reveal personal details (occupation, nationality, travel companions beyond what's relevant). Don't write anything you couldn't defend if the guest saw it, because they will. Don't use guest reviews to vent about unresolved disputes; handle those through Airbnb's Resolution Centre first. Don't leave a 5-star review for a guest you'd privately rate lower, that's how bad guests stay in the system.

The timing question

Airbnb gives both host and guest 14 days to review each other, and reviews only go live once both have submitted or the 14 days expire. Many hosts wait to see what the guest writes first. Don't. Write your review within 24 to 48 hours of check-out while the details are fresh. Holding reviews hostage is transparent and prospective guests sometimes notice the pattern. Writing promptly also models the behaviour you want from your guests, they're more likely to review you quickly in return.

Scaling without losing specificity

If you're hosting 10+ stays a month, reviewing each guest individually becomes a real time cost. The temptation is to paste the same generic sentence for everyone, which defeats the purpose.

A better approach: keep a short private note at check-out, two or three bullet points about what actually happened, and draft the review from those notes. The whole process takes three minutes per guest and keeps your reviews specific enough to be useful.
